About Port Hueneme

Port Hueneme (pronounced "why-NEE-mee") is a small beach city almost surrounded by Oxnard, with a south-facing sandy beach, a fishing pier and the Point Hueneme Lighthouse at the harbor entrance. The deep-water Port of Hueneme and the Navy's Port Hueneme base (part of Naval Base Ventura County and home of the Seabees) are major employers.

Buyers find a relaxed, walkable beach-town feel, often at lower prices than many coastal cities. Housing is mostly condos and townhomes near the beach, including several Surfside communities, plus modest single-family neighborhoods inland.

Lifestyle & things to do

  • Hueneme Beach Park and pier are the heart of town, with a beachfront path and seasonal events.
  • The Lighthouse Promenade follows the shore toward the Point Hueneme Lighthouse, which opens for tours on a regular schedule.
  • The U.S. Navy Seabee Museum is open to the public.
  • Restaurants and shops are close by in Port Hueneme and at Oxnard's Channel Islands Harbor.

Parks & outdoors

The beach is the main attraction: surfing, fishing from the pier, volleyball and long walks toward Ormond Beach. Bubbling Springs Park and its greenbelt path run through the middle of the city. Point Mugu State Park and the Santa Monica Mountains are about 20 minutes south.

Schools

  • Hueneme Elementary School District serves transitional kindergarten through 8th grade.
  • High school students attend Oxnard Union High School District schools, primarily Hueneme High School, with academy and magnet options district-wide.
  • Oxnard College and CSU Channel Islands are both within about 20 minutes.

Confirm the school assignment for a specific address with the district.

Neighborhoods

  • Surfside and other beachfront condo and townhome communities: walk-to-the-sand living, usually with HOA dues covering shared amenities.
  • Inland single-family neighborhoods: mostly 1950s-1970s homes on modest lots.
  • Nearby Silver Strand (unincorporated) and Oxnard's harbor neighborhoods are often shopped together with Port Hueneme.

Getting around

  • Roads: Ventura Road, Victoria Avenue and Hueneme Road connect to US-101 in Oxnard and to Camarillo; SR-1 runs nearby toward Point Mugu and Malibu.
  • Rail: The Oxnard Transit Center (Metrolink and Amtrak) is about 15 minutes away.
  • Approximate drive times (light traffic): Oxnard 10 min, Camarillo 20 min, Ventura 20 min, Santa Barbara 50 min, downtown Los Angeles about 1 hr 15 min.

Utilities

Electricity: Southern California Edison (SCE) owns the lines, reads the meter and sends the bill (sce.com, 1-800-655-4555). Port Hueneme is a newer Clean Power Alliance (CPA) member and defaults to the Clean Power (50% renewable) tier; CPA publishes separate rate sheets for Port Hueneme. Customers can switch tiers or opt out at cleanpoweralliance.org or 888-585-3788.

Natural gas: Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) (socalgas.com, 1-800-427-2200). Some rural and hillside homes use propane instead, so check the listing.

Water: City of Port Hueneme. Most supply comes through the Port Hueneme Water Agency's treatment plant, which the City operates, with the rest from Calleguas MWD.

Sewer: City of Port Hueneme.

Trash and recycling: City of Port Hueneme Solid Waste Division (city-run collection).

Internet: Spectrum (cable) is the most common wired option; Frontier or AT&T offer DSL or fiber depending on the neighborhood, and fixed-wireless (T-Mobile, Verizon) and satellite services fill gaps. Look up the exact address on the FCC National Broadband Map.
