Harbors, beaches and farmland on the Ventura County coast
Oxnard is Ventura County's largest city, spread across the flat, fertile Oxnard Plain between the Santa Clara River and Point Mugu. Agriculture (strawberries above all), the Port of Hueneme next door and Naval Base Ventura County anchor the economy, and the city has a deep, multigenerational Latino community and culture.
For buyers, Oxnard offers some of the most varied options in the county: beach and harbor homes on the west side, newer master-planned neighborhoods to the north, and established mid-century neighborhoods closer to downtown, often at lower prices than the Conejo Valley. The coastal breeze keeps temperatures mild year-round.
Oxnard has miles of beach: Oxnard Beach Park, Mandalay and the Silver Strand and Hollywood Beach areas around the harbor. McGrath State Beach and the Santa Clara River estuary lie to the north, and Point Mugu State Park with its beaches and canyon trails is about 20 minutes south. The City runs numerous neighborhood parks and recreation programs.
With four elementary districts, school assignment really does depend on the address; confirm with the district.
School boundaries change. Verify the assigned schools for any address directly with the school district.
Electricity: Southern California Edison (SCE) owns the lines, reads the meter and sends the bill (sce.com, 1-800-655-4555). Oxnard is a member of Clean Power Alliance (CPA), so homes are enrolled in CPA for the power supply by default; the default tier is 100% Green Power. Customers can switch tiers or opt out at cleanpoweralliance.org or 888-585-3788.
Natural gas: Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) (socalgas.com, 1-800-427-2200). Some rural and hillside homes use propane instead, so check the listing.
Water and sewer: The City of Oxnard Public Works Department provides water and wastewater service inside city limits; water, sewer and trash appear on one City utility bill. Unincorporated beach areas (Silver Strand, Hollywood Beach) are served by other agencies.
Trash and recycling: City-operated, through the Oxnard Environmental Resources Division (805-385-8060).
Internet: Spectrum (cable) is the most common wired option; Frontier or AT&T offer DSL or fiber depending on the neighborhood, and fixed-wireless (T-Mobile, Verizon) and satellite services fill gaps. Look up the exact address on the FCC National Broadband Map.
