About Moorpark

Moorpark sits where SR-23 and SR-118 meet, between Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and the farm country of the Las Posas Valley. It is one of the county's younger cities and much of its housing dates from the 1980s onward, but its historic High Street, with its old theater and train depot, gives it a small-town center.

Buyers like Moorpark for its newer neighborhoods, community feel and central location: Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley are each about 15 minutes away, and the station on High Street makes a train commute possible.

Lifestyle & things to do

  • High Street has the High Street Arts Center, restaurants, community events and the train depot.
  • Moorpark College is home to America's Teaching Zoo, which opens to the public on weekends.
  • Underwood Family Farms offers seasonal pick-your-own produce and a popular fall harvest festival.
  • City-run events, sports leagues and parks keep the community calendar busy.

Parks & outdoors

The City of Moorpark runs the local parks, including the large Arroyo Vista Community Park. Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park, a county wilderness park on the north edge of town, has long hiking, biking and equestrian trails. Simi Valley's and Thousand Oaks' open-space trail networks are both a short drive away.

Schools

  • Moorpark Unified School District serves the city, including Moorpark High School and The High School at Moorpark College, an early-college program on the college campus.
  • The district has elementary and middle schools across town, including choice and magnet programs.
  • Moorpark College is on the north side of town.

Neighborhoods

  • Peach Hill and Mountain Meadows: 1980s-90s single-family neighborhoods with parks and schools nearby.
  • Campus Park and the area around Moorpark College: established homes near the college and the 23.
  • Moorpark Highlands and other newer hillside developments: 2000s-era homes, some with views.
  • Old Town / High Street area: older and smaller homes within walking distance of downtown.

Getting around

  • Freeways: SR-23 south to Thousand Oaks and the 101; SR-118 east to Simi Valley and the San Fernando Valley, and west toward Somis and Saticoy.
  • Rail: The Moorpark station on High Street serves Metrolink's Ventura County Line and Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner.
  • Approximate drive times (light traffic): Thousand Oaks 15 min, Simi Valley 15 min, Camarillo 20 min, downtown Los Angeles about 50 min to 1 hr (longer at rush hour), Santa Barbara about 1 hr.

Utilities

Electricity: Southern California Edison (SCE) owns the lines, reads the meter and sends the bill (sce.com, 1-800-655-4555). Moorpark is a member of Clean Power Alliance (CPA), so homes are enrolled in CPA for the power supply by default; the default tier is Clean Power (50% renewable). Customers can switch tiers or opt out at cleanpoweralliance.org or 888-585-3788.

Natural gas: Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) (socalgas.com, 1-800-427-2200). Some rural and hillside homes use propane instead, so check the listing.

Water and sewer: Ventura County Waterworks District No. 1 provides water and sewer service for most of Moorpark.

Trash and recycling: Waste Management (G.I. Industries) under the City franchise.

Internet: Spectrum (cable) is the most common wired option; Frontier or AT&T offer DSL or fiber depending on the neighborhood, and fixed-wireless (T-Mobile, Verizon) and satellite services fill gaps. Look up the exact address on the FCC National Broadband Map.
